MDiv Program Mission

The mission of the Master of Religious Education deg= ree is to equip persons for competent leadership in Christian Education to serve congregational ministries and other religious institutions. This purpose = is consistent with the mission of Shaw University Divinity School; the Maste= r of Religious Education program focuses on leadership in the “practice = of ministry,” particularly in the African American Church

The mission of the Master of Divinity degree is to p= repare persons for ordained ministry, for chaplaincy, general pastoral and relig= ious leadership responsibilities in congregations and other settings, and to prepare some students for admission to advanced programs oriented to theological research and teaching. The purpose is consistent with the mis= sion of Shaw= University Divini= ty School; the Maste= r of Divinity program focuses on leadership in the “practice of ministry,” particularly in the African American church

  1. to equip students with the capacity for critical and constructive theological reflection regarding the conte= nt and processes of educational ministry;
  2. to help students understand the education= al, social, and behavioral sciences that undergird<= /span> educational practice, as well as the cultural contexts in which educational ministry occurs;
  3. to assist students with personal growth a= nd spiritual maturity; and
  4. to provides skills in teaching and in desig= n, administration, and assessment of educational programming.

 
  1. to provide students with an intellectual atmosphere and a comprehensive, discriminating understanding of our religious heritage;
  2. to enhance s= tudent training for Christian ministry, mindful of global, and diverse cross cultural, and non-American Christianities, and interaction with other faith traditions;
  3. to support students' development in the personal and spiritual capacities neces= sary for pastoral and religious leadership, advancing growth in personal faith, emotional maturity, moral integrity, and public witness;=

GENERAL DES= CRIPTION:  This course is designed to introdu= ce students to a faith-based response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the African American community and beyond.  The course is designed to increase awareness of the disease, introduce preventi= ve measures through education and to motivate active participation in preventi= on. This multidiscipline course presents studies on HIV/AIDS in the Old Testame= nt, New Testament, Theology, Pastoral Care and History.

Assignments:

 

Students are expected to w= rite reflection papers on the chapters identified in the weekly assignments.  All reflection papers should be 2-= page double-spaced, 12 pitch. 

 

  1. Students will be required to research specific HIV/AIDS d= ata as assigned by the instructor and report findings in a presentation to= the class. 
  2. Students will be required to present current news article= on HIV/AIDS to be shared in the class.&n= bsp; Articles may be provided by newspaper, magazine or internet.
  3. Students will be expected to participate in at least one = HIV conference and write a summary paper.  The Black Church Week of Praye= r for the Healing of AIDS is March 2-7.&nbs= p; Students are expected to attend at least one sessions during the week. 
  4. Students will be expected to work with their pastor to organize a workshop in their local church to raise prevention awarenes= s.  A final paper of 7-8 pages is required to report results of the local church workshop.  The following questions shoul= d be addressed in your paper: 

1.&n= bsp;     Was the pastor o= pen to hosting a workshop? 

2.&n= bsp;     Were there any obstacles or opposition and how did you resolve them? 

3.&n= bsp;     What steps did y= ou take to implement plans for the workshop?&= nbsp;

4.&n= bsp;     Did you have a c= ommittee to assist you? 

5.&n= bsp;     How did you adve= rtise the workshop?
